We will be reading and discussing two chapters this week. We will start with chapter 15 on Monday and Tuesday and finish with chapter 17 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

I am very excited about our study of the early people of the desert southwest. During this study we will be learning about the Hohokam, the Anasazi, the Mogollon, and the Pueblo civilizations. Due the types of materials we will be using assessment is more difficult for this lesson, students will not be able to take most of the literature out of the classroom. So, instead of a traditional test students will have a two part assessment. Part 1 will be to create a collage of pictures representing the desert southwest. This collage is to be regular typing paper size, and it will be worth 20 points. The collage is due on March 22nd. The second part will be a vocabulary assessment worth 80 points. The vocabulary test will be on March 22nd.

Social Studies Chapter 10
Students will be reading and writing detailed summaries of 3-5 paragraphs on each lesson. The correct use of each lessons vocabulary word is mandatory. Students will have 2 days in class to read and write these summaries. Each summary will be worth 50 points. Students have one lesson on fact and opinion during the course of study of chapter 10.

1/20/2012 ~ Students that scored less than 80% on their states quiz will be bringing their quiz home to be signed by a parent. The quiz then must be returned on Monday 1/23/2012. Students that received less than 80% may retake the quiz after school on Monday 1/23/2012. This will be the only time to retake this quiz.

The Great Roman Empire
Chapter 9
We will be studying ancient Rome for the next two weeks. Students will be reading about the geography, Roman government and its leaders, the arts and the effects religion on the Roman society. We will be doing various assignments including a lesson on the use of a flow chart and mapping skills. Our assessment for this chapter will be the creation of a poster showing comprehension of the material presented. Students will need to provide their own poster board (available at the dollar store, as well as many other places) by Wednesday 1/25/12. I have markers, glue, scissors, and colored pencils for students to use. We will have time in class on 1/26 & 1/27 to work on posters, and they will be due Monday 1/30 at the start of class.
The required elements for the posters include:
1 paragraph summary of each lesson (there are 4 lessons total)
4-8 pictures representing the material covered in the chapter
1 map of Ancient Rome
A bibliography citing 3 sources of information, one being the text book and an additional 2 sources are required
Grading will be based on the inclusion of each element and the overall presentation (neatness) of the poster. Pictures may be hand drawn or come from the internet. Neatly drawn pictures will have the same value as internet pictures.
Grading Rubric:
1. 4 summary paragraphs representing each lesson--- up to 20 points each.
2. Minimum of 4 pictures representing the information in the chapter ---2.5 points each up to 8 pictures.
3. A map of ancient Rome---up to 10 points.
4. Bibliography with 3 citations--- 15 points (5 per citation.)
5. Overall presentation and neatness--- up 20 points.
Total points possible: 165
165-148.5 =A 148-132 = B
131-115.5 = C 115-99 = D less than 98 = F
